Artist Statement

I began working on these fiber pieces toward the end of 2019 to assuage the anxiety I was feeling about a premonition I had that something bad was going to happen. At the time, I thought maybe a major earthquake was going to hit California, but I was wrong about that. Instead it turned out to be the 2020 pandemic.

This work embodies the fear and anxiety I experienced during lockdown, it eased my mind to keep my hands busy. I focused on creating these weblike nets using old canvas paintings as the substrate. I wove and knotted threads, embroidery floss, strings, and ripped fabrics throughout the work. I worked mindlessly, not worrying about the outcome, and it became my safety net- the outlet I used to keep my sanity during 2020.
